  Minimonica
It's good to see that two-dimensional shooting games aren't always about spaceships, aliens and big guns, a change is always welcome. In this case, you take control of kawaii (Japanese for "cute") little fairy Monica, battling colorful enemies in an Anime fantasy setting. There's even a plot narrated by short cutscenes, but since the text is in Japanese, we can't really know what's happening - not a big loss for the game's enjoyment, luckily. Visually speaking, the game is a little gem. The Anime style is perfect, as well the use of colors, the variety of enemies (most of them are seen only in specific levels) is great and the multiparallax backgrounds are equally varied, and very good. Bosses and sub-bosses are the most impressive part of the graphics; there are also beautiful drawings for the cutscenes. It all looks like a game from the golden times of Sega Genesis. The soundtrack consists of quite good songs, matching the fantasy setting perfectly. The keys are the same of most of the Japanese shooters: arrows, Z to fire, X to use a bomb called Super Magic. You make selections in the starting screen (not that there's much to choose from, only Start and Exit), choose to continue or not - and how can you refuse, with Monica staring at you with puppy eyes in the continue screen? - and skip cutscenes by using Shift, Enter or Space. You start with a simple magic shot, and by bonuses you can get Fire, Water and Wind weapons, which can be upgraded only once and have their advantages and disadvantages: for example, the basic Wind is nothing special but the upgraded one is quite powerful and widespread. Do not be afraid to use the Super Magic (which changes according to the type of shot you currently have) in case of danger, also since you can't get it as a bonus to be picked up: one is given to you only when you are hit. You will also be able to take back your weapon immediately, with a bonus icon reappearing close to you, but here lies one of the biggest flaws of the game: the icon always starts with Fire, and since in the meantime you must move to avoid enemy bullets, you will be almost forced to take Fire. This causes a big disadvantage to the other two shot types. If you worry about Monica's sprite seeming too big to avoid the worst swarms of enemy shots, keep in mind that the real collision point is in the center, around the chest area; hat and legs aren't affected. Now, because of the general cuteness, you could think of Minimonica as an easy product for an unexperienced audience; it's the exact opposite. This game is challenging! The levels are seven, and not very long for the record, but the action is so fast, the enemies so fierce at times, and the shots barrages so big, that you must be lucky to pass level 4 alive. Well, to be honest, this is also due to a badly designed part in it: you must go through a sort of maze, avoiding collision with walls, but some passages are unfairly tight. Not something that kills the overall fun, but a very annoying detail nonetheless. Unlike many shooters with lots of or even infinite credits, easily killing longevity, Minimonica has only ten. The game comes with two downloadable versions, labeled Normal and Easy, the latter being easier than the former - but not easy at all! Despite some imperfections, this is a game not to be missed by shooting maniacs - unless you are totally disgusted by cuteness, obviously. The download link leads to the Normal version of the game. To get the Easy one, just go to the official site, you will easily find it on top of the page.

  Dim
Dim is a difficult platform-puzzle hybrid that is original and enjoyable. In Dim, you are a strange, dimension-shifting creature who is apparently released by a scientist when he is fired by the government. Then, for no apparent reason, the creature must survive many levels of spikes, killer fish, and other obstacles. There are two dimensions you can be in. Dimension-shifting will sometime require good timing, as a platform may exist in one dimension, but not in another (ala Metroid Prime: Echoes). This is an interesting edition to the game, and more features are introduced as you advance. After a level is beaten, you are taken to a screen in which you pick the next level. Yes, there is an option here. This creates a sort of non-linear feeling. The graphics in this game are smooth, the sound is of high quality. A real good game.

  ReCUB 2000
Your memory gets challanged in this logic game. You may remember the kid's game called "Simon Says" where you try to remember the pattern that the computer (Simon) gives you. This game is similar to this concept. ReCUB 2000 comes with 2 boards (skins), but you can download more from the author's website. Each board has a different set of buttons (with or without numbers). The graphics arereally neat!

  Blokketiblok
Remember Pengo? Its concept was: destroy the enemies by pushing the blocks on the screen against them. If a block can move, it will slide in the direction you pushed it until it finds an obstacle; while, if it can't move due to an obstacle adjacent to it, it will be crushed. Around this simple rules a very fun game was built. And Blokketiblok is one of the best Pengo clones I ever saw. Graphics are clean, colorful and really cute, the standing animation of the character, Blokketi, is really fun; the enemy one-eyed balls, called Zzepallepa, are nice too. I love the music. Blokketiblok also adds new elements to spice up the original gameplay. Special blocks can explode, or split in parts - quite effective when there are more than one Zzepallepa targeted. Three special gem blocks give a considerable bonus if aligned. The various colors of the normal blocks aren't only an aestehtic issue: if you align two or more of the same color, they will be changed into golden globes, more golden globes when you complete a level, bigger bonus. But there's a drawback: golden globes can't be moved nor crushed by Blokketi (while the Zzepallepa can), so be careful or you could negate yourself the blocks you need to win. Every four levels there's a bonus one, slightly resemblant of Pacman. Last but not least, if you move towards a wall and press the Push/Crush key, a wave freezing every Zzapallapa close to that wall will be generated. Another nice touch is the randomness of the level order: you will play them in a different sequence every new game, though some levels show up more frequently than others. In general, Blokketiblok tends to become repetitive after a while. However, it's great fun to play, good for both a quick play and record-breaking sessions. So, I personally give this very good rating, but for some people it could be worth a point less, due to repetitiveness. Italian version of the game's site here.

  Trick Blast
Trick Blast is an arcade ball game for one or two players. You can play against a friend or the computer. Move the arrow with your mouse and left click to shoot a ball. The arrow is auto-aimed at the ball that needs to be knocked into the goal. The aim of the game is quite easy, blast your own balls and hit a large green ball to make it roll towards the other side of the playfield. Beware that your balls explode after a couple of seconds and that you can only have a limited number of balls in play at the same time. This game is best described as a mixture between pinball, pool, shooting and some other classic games.
