Strategy 3: The Dark Legions
Strategy 3 is a real-time strategy game that plays just like Warcraft3 and Age of Empires, maybe a little too similar. But what the heck, ain't Warcraft3 and Age of Empires the best of their kind? Expect Strategy 3 to be a masterpiece, a champion in the freeware scene.
Gameplay is very similar to Warcraft3 and AOE. Fans of these games will find the controls of Strategy 3 to be very familiar.
Especially where Warcraft3 is concerned, most of its concepts have been used here. Even the loading screen looks like the one in Warcraft2. While Strategy 3 won't score points for originality, the 'Warcrafish' gameplay already makes up for it. Not to mention the game is much easier to handle for older machines, so the speed is much better here if you don't mind the graphics.
The author has actually bothered to make this game 3d! It all depends on personal taste. I found the graphics to be good, clean and easy on the eyes, but some will comment that they are a little too dull and shabby. The details in this game are also commendable. Units really move and work. You can also see the progress of the buildings being worked on.
The sound is clear and good. There is a lack of music which I think could improve the game's atmosphere especially for an RTS like this.
While Strategy 3 is almost a flawless masterpiece (in freeware standards of course), the game is very buggy. Expect plenty of crashes during the game. The lack of a save feature makes things even worst. And pressing the esc button will immediately exit the game without any prompting. These buggy issues will keep me from giving this game a ten.
Summing up, a must download for freeware gamers!!! :)

Spice Trade
The question posed by Spice Trade is this:
How would history have developed if the Muslims had come to dominate Europe?
The answer is in your hands. Spice Trade casts you in the role of a young man in Baghdad with little but a plot of farmland and a handful of money. From these humble beginnings you must gain wealth, power, wives, and children.
Consisting of little but static images with clickable hotspots, Spice Trade is an open-ended game of resource management, adventure, and discovery. There is no explicit goal in the game, other than to live your life to the fullest. Along the way you will scour the world for rare treasures, get into the spice and drug trades, find wives, and can even bring Europe under your heel, either by military force or cultural influence.
This is one of those games that you will either love or hate. If you're looking for action, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a small download, look elsewhere, because Spice Trade is a very large download. If you have the patience to learn its nuances, you will find yourself quickly addicted to this game. I spent several hours just wandering around the world checking out all the things I could do.
The game is written in Java, and thus will run on any operating system that has a Java runtime. You will need to know how to execute Java .jar files on your particular system.
