UFO
UFO is one of the most innovative games I've ever played. It's made by the same people behind Smash (also on GameHippo), and, while Smash may have revolutionized a genre, UFO is in a genre all to its own! I've never seen a game like this before, and if somebody has, do not hesitate to e-mail me with its title.
Obviously, you take control of a UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) that has one, two, three, or perhaps zero stars revolving around it. Each star shoots star-like objects in whichever direction they are facing. In order to destroy your target (whether it be computer-controlled, inanimate, or human), you must throw them against the wall using your stars. [Space] shoots, and you move your UFO with the arrow keys. There are two single player game modes.
The first one is "Battle". Judging by the name, it should be somewhat obvious what kind of mode this is. Your job is to eliminate your computer opponent using the stars you are given. However, it is a normal deathmatch game. Sometimes you'll have a rapid-fire double star, and your opponent will have a one-star, one-shot, but extremely strong star. You'll never know until you play that level.
The second mode is called "Time Attack", and, no, this isn't the normal boring time attack. It's actually a very refined target practice game, and not all the targets are the same. There are slow moving targets, fast moving targets, targets that you can run right through, and even targets that are attached to the background with a bungee cord. To add to the mayhem, you have to dodge yellow spiked balls that take away 50 points of health (about 1/4 your total). And did I mention that you have to complete it within ten seconds, not to mention keeping your health bar alive? Though both of the aforementioned modes were great, I think T-Attack is the best, not to mention the most addictive.
While all the multiplayer modes are battle-deathmatch games in their essence (or at least all of the modes that I've accessed), they are each very intriguing. For instance, one of the modes takes away all stars, and pits you against the other person in a world of asteroids. The only way to kill your enemy is by running him into the wall using your UFO, but remember, the asteroids are constantly moving which means they may more damage to you than you do to your enemy, or vice versa. That's just one of the many different multiplayer modes, but I'll leave the rest as a surprise.
The graphics are very crisp. The UFOs' cartoon-like graphics, the starry background and flashy stars go very well together. As for the sound, any player of Smash will easily recognize the same "intro", "finish", and "fail" music. The normal in-game music is the drum-and-techno stuff you hear everywhere.
The Bottom Line: Fighting, Deathmatch, Spaceshooter, Arcade - all these could apply to this game, yet none of them capture its essence. UFO is a game like no other and therefore has no comparison. I fear that people may not be able to see it as the gem it truly is, and if my assumptions are correct, I pity their souls. This is not a game to be missed.
