  Seafarers of Catan 3D (Sea3D)
For those who have not played The Settlers of Catan board game, here is a brief overview: you are the commander of a colony on the isle of Catan. Through resource management (and using those resources to build roads, settlements, and cities), you seek to gain 10 "Victory Points" to win the game. "Victory Points" are earned through the amount of settlements and cities you have, special cards, and meeting certain requirements (such as who has the longest continuous road). When it comes to involving strategy games, The Settlers of Catan is one of the best. This version of the game could also be considered one of the best. The 3D interface is smooth and responsive. The camera control is simple: hold down the Right Mouse Button to spin the board around and the Mouse Wheel to zoom in and out. It couldn't be simpler to control. The graphics themselves are like looking down on a real Settlers of Catan hex board, right down to the number tokens. Everything is clear and readable, even up close. You have the choice of the default, more grainy graphics (for anyone with a slower computer or graphics card) or a "Vivid" OpenGL graphics option that makes the board so real looking, you would swear you could reach out and touch the cardboard hex tiles. The sounds are very nice and clear. Each move you make is accompanied by a sound: the rolling of wooden dice on the board, sawing and hammering when cities and settlements are built, and the evil laugh of the Robber as he is ready to move on your opponents at the first Seven on the dice. The game itself plays just like you were playing the real board game surrounded by your friends. Pieces are easy to place and move. Illustrated lines and zones come up that show you where you can place anything you need to. Other than the legend, though, the game has no real help for playing the game itself. While the game is mostly self-guided and doesn't take too long to learn, having the game rules somewhere in the help system would have been a plus. For those who want to play online, the author's webpage has ladder matches and a chat room, where you can join the large community this game has built. In short, if you want a great strategy board game to play online or with friends, look no further than this one. UPDATE: Sea3d has been updated to 1.2.0a. It is a required download, especially if you use the S3D Connector to play online games, as many changes to the website (including online gaming and ranking systems) have occured. Also fixes other minor bugs. Download links you to the download page.
