  Doukutsu Montogari~ Cave Story
Have you ever played a freeware game with so much fun and so much replay value that it stands alongside commercially-made classics? Doukutsu Montogari is that kind of game. Its an action/adventure title complete with appropriately challenging levels, a decent story, and a fair amount of weapons. Although in the front-page description I stated that it plays like Metroid, the game actually plays much more like a little-known PS1 game called Silhouette Mirage. If youve played that, youll find the triangle-shaped mana tokens, obscure character design, and multiple endings to be very familiar. But assuming you havent, Ill tell you what the games about. In Doukutsu, you start out by awaking in a small cave, not knowing your name or where you came from. You soon find out that you are on a large floating island inhabited by small rabbit-like creatures called Mimigas. You then learn that a villain called The Doctor is trying to capture them in order to create a Mimiga army. When you have completed about 1/4 of the game, you will start to choose your own path through the story. Thats the beauty of it; by answering simple yes-or-no questions during dialogue, you decide what levels you go to, what weapons you receive, and how the game ultimately ends. You can upgrade your weapons on-the-go by collecting triangle-shaped mana tokens from fallen foes. The weapons will downgrade when you are damaged while carrying them. But dont worry; leveling up is a simple process. Doukutsu really doesnt suffer from any problems. You may not like the old-school graphics or sounds, but many will welcome the classic flavor. In my opinion, the game easily beats a few Nintendo classics, and even the game it is clearly inspired by, Silhouette Mirage. In the 6+ hours that I played, I never once encountered a bug, and the story and gameplay kept me interested throughout. With the occasional large amount of enemies on the screen, it may slow down once or twice on older computers, but it should run just fine. Its even friendly to your hard drive, with a size of 395 KB zipped, and 5 MB unzipped. If youre an old-school gamer, enjoyed Silhouette Mirage or Metroid, or if youre just looking for a game that will keep your attention for more than an hour, I suggest you download Doukutsu today. NOTE: Download links to an English website where you can download both the game and the English patch. As Doukutsu Montogari is a story-based action game, its pretty much useless without the patch.
PC REQUIREMENTS: Should run on almost any PC with minor slowdown
