  Nathan's Second Chance
What do you expect when you die? Shining light? Booming voice? Rotting slowly in the ground? You probably don't expect to be greeted by a grouchy old crone in a flying yellow bus, but then, neither does Nathan. Thats how the game starts for you, as Nathan walk out of the door, have a heart attack, and die to be greeted by this flying yellow bus and taken to some sort of research post in deep space When there you find out why youve been taken to well, not the afterlife, exactly. You see, youre going to be getting a second chance a chance to sort your life out, basically. Reconcile with your daughter mainly which may not be easy. With information from a slide-show and a little help from your friends, however, you may just be able to pull it off What we have here is a traditional point and click adventure, and a well executed one it is. However, what I really liked about this game was the surreal, slightly warped humour that came from both the characters and dialogue, along with the fact that this is a game with a heart. The author, Tim Knauf, has done a great job with that and also in making sure there is plenty of variety in the type of puzzles to be solved, without any of them being real stumpers. All in all this is a great little game for anyone who enjoys adventure games, while serving as a perfect introduction to the genre for anyone unused to them The game is of course freeware but I really do ask that if you play the game and enjoy it, you email the author (address on his website mentioned below). Im hoping that if he gets enough response, hell write another! :-D Final Ratings Graphics: 8/10 very colourful and stylistic hand-drawn graphics with some nice animated touches to. Sound: 7/10 some good quality sound effects and bits of good music here and there (no MIDI files!) Playability: 8/10 easy to use interface that does what you need with the minimum of fuss. Longevity: 7/10 a decent-length game, over far too shortly, but thats largely because its so enjoyable in the first place! Replay Value: 8/10 the warped humour and short length make for a game youll come back to after a while. This is a slightly abridged version of my review which first appeared at http://www.epinions.com/content_4636975236

  Quadra
A valiant and highly working attempt to create an attractive Tetris clone. One of the strongest feature in this game is the ability to play online which is accompanied by a chat window. However, I reviewed this game in single mode, so I cannot further comment the online mode. The graphical rendering is both sweet and smooth for all 10 levels. If you are a narcisist (or not), you can happily use the playback option - at different speeds even.

  Squarez
Squarez is a super-difficult puzzler that only the most hardcore will get the hang of. Therefore, if you're looking for a way to kill 20 minutes, I suggest you give this game a try when you have some more time on you. But if you want a good puzzle game that will become better and more addictive as you devote more time to it, Squarez may be just what you're looking for. In Squarez, you have a board of 64 pieces with 3 variations of shape and color. You must link together 4 pieces of the same shape and color in a perfect square in order to gain points, remove pieces from the board (which are replaced by more shapes falling from the top of the screen as soon as they are removed), and add time to an ever-ticking countdown clock. The bigger the square, the more points you get and the more time is added to the timer. If the square is at an unusual angle, you gain double points. When you remove 10 squares (40 pieces) from the board, you move onto the next round. If you can't seem to find any squares to clear on the board, you can press the Panic button to rearrange the pieces. You can use the Panic button three times in a game. Squarez is well-made and well thought-out, but the game has one rule that I don't quite like: with each consecutive round, the points you gain for removing a square doubles, and the clock runs a little bit faster. At first, the doubling of points may not sound like a bad idea, but it really is. Think about it: You clear lots of large squares, some of them at strange angles. But eventually, time runs out and it's game over. Someone else lasts two rounds longer than you do, but they get there by clearing easy squares. Two rounds ahead of you, the points that person gets for clearing a square of a certain size are quadruple what you would have gotten. Is that fair? I think not. So, how do you distinguish a score of 5,000 from a score of 50,000? You don't. That's why Squarez recieved a 7 and not an 8. Quite simply, Squarez is an excellent puzzle game, one of the deepest, hardest, and most fun I've ever played. You just have to give it some time. Problem is, I suspect most people won't want to spend three hours playing a freeware game just to get the hang of it. But if you do, I assure you that you won't be disappointed. Unlike other games, I'm not saying you should just try Squarez; I'm saying you should spend hours on end with this gem of a puzzle game to fully appreciate it.

  Rapid Fire DX
Rapid Fire DX comes packaged with the original version and a modern version enhanched by DirectX visual effects. The graphics in the game are are both crisp and clear and with a classic arcadian feeling - both the parallax starry background as well as the sprites. Firstly, I played the classic version which was extremely easy in the beginning and you would have to enter level 7 before you reach any restistance. With only 1 life allotted, if you get killed by a space mine or an enemy ship, you would have to progress all lower actionless levels to reach the higher levels of more fun - a tedious progress. On the flipside, the original adaptation is faithful if that's what you want. Naturally, the spiced-up DX version provides the same action but with cool quasi-3D effects. I say "quasi" because we are still in a side-scolling universe.

  Adea: Devils and Angels
Adea: Devils and Angels is, at best, a disappointing attempt at creating a free-roaming console style platformer in the same vein as the far, far, far superior Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. My experience with Adea got less and less enjoyable as I progressed in the screenshot viewing, downloading, installation, and, eventually, playing the game itself. Not that I took anything off the score for it, but Adea, although only a little over 8 megs, takes a loooong time to download . I'm talking 2kbps, with DSL. I left my computer on overnight in antcipation that this would be a great, one-of-a-kind game. Yet, once again, I have been deceived by the pretty pictures that are screenshots. Upon booting up and starting to play Adea, I realized that this was not the great game that I hoped it to be. It was, however, an enjoyable romp through a rather pretty world featuring some incredibly stupid enemies and some incredibly annoying jumping sequences. The basic premise, as I first thought at least, is to collect all of the crystals in the level and make your way to the exit, which is a pool of dark liquidy stuff. Mid-way through the first level, however, I was passing by the ever-appearant exit pool and became curious as to what would happen should I exit the level before completing it. This was where Adea's score plummeted a good 3 points: I walked into the exit...and finished the level. I wondered if perhaps I had already collected a sufficient amount of crystals, if not all of them, and thus was able to proceed. This was not the case; I strolled through level 2 without picking up one crystal, and beat it in under 20 seconds. Level 3 featured a stupidly glitchy boss character, 'Death'. I beat him/it without much problem, and thus went on to finish the game. I wouldn't bet my savings over it (who am I kidding? I don't have any savings), but I'm pretty sure that the game can be beaten in under 4 minutes, if not quicker. Of course, should you feel the incentive to, you could try to 100% the game, in which case you'd probably get more enjoyment (thus a 4/10 rather than, say, a 2/10). Still, even if you do get everything, 3 levels just ain't enough. It really is a shame that Adea turned out to be what it is, because the game obviously has some potential. If you're curious, and don't mind waiting 3+ hours for an 8 meg download, then go ahead and try it out. Everyone else: Stay far, far, far, away. Bottom Line: Adea is not neccesarily a truly bad game, it just suffers from quite a few noticeable flaws, glitches, and gameplay problems, which set it way back from being what it could have been. Note: Despite the arguably controversial name, this game contains absolutely nothing that may be viewed as offensive, and thus earns a Kid-Safe rating. Note: A head-honcho at Full Sail (a programming school) informed me that Adea was actually a 2-month project in which it's creators had to 'show their stuff'. So I may add that for a 100% original game made in only 2 months, Adea is, from a technical stand-point and for those that can appreciate it, a pretty fine showing. Thanks to the aforementioned head-honcho for this information.
