  Bruce Lee
I assume that many of you grew up in the era when many of the classic Commodore 64 were popular and for many its now a fond memory of the 80's. One of those long-gone classic was a game called Bruce Lee. Now is your change to relive and be young again! This PC clone is a very good emulation of the original from 1986 with the same name. The author of this game has boldly "borrowed" the original graphics which of course make the memories of Bruce Lee so much vivid. It's undoubtly a genuine and commendable attempt to bring back a good old Commodore game to our modern time. In the game menu, you can select 1-2 players of which your opponent can be human or AI, and one of the 3 skill levels. The basic movements (walking and climbing) and kicking is very easy to learn. The graphics in the game conform nicely with the old colors of Commodore 64. The game completes when you manage to kill the Wizard. All original levels are included (20 levels total) - YAY! NOTE: There is a bug in the game installation that prevents you from installing the game other than in the default folder (C:\Games\Bruce Lee\) - which is doesn't really matter much. If you try to install the game somewhere else you get an error message that "Images/Wizard.png doesn't exist".
PC REQUIREMENTS: Videocard with hardware acceleration

  Captain Pork's World Violence
I've never been a big fan of Liero or it's clones but (Full title:) Captian Pork's World of Violence has made me a believer. At first I booted up the game and, after a few minutes of playtime, was pretty unimpressed. A week later I decided to blow 5 minutes and give it another chance. For some reason, this time I got hooked. If you've ever played Liero (a cult freeware classic that is available right here on Gamehippo), then you'll pretty much know the basics of what to expect: Take control of a character and dig your way around the map, picking up weaapons and other power-ups and blowing the opposition to pieces. Well, that's pretty much what Captain Pork's is about but it also throws in more than it's fair share of twists to the formula. Before your character spawns (or respawns after dying) you get a choice of what type of soldier you want him to be. There are plenty of choices, each with their own strenghts and weaknesses; pretty much every playing style is catered to. There are guns aplenty as well. In fact, I doubt I have ever seen such an assortment of weaponry and other mechanisms of destruction in any other game. It's lots of fun to search out new weapons and test them out on your little friends. There are tons of customization options in CP:WoV, ranging from A.I. difficulty to sand color, as well as game modes, which include the basic but always fun deathmatch modes to other, more original, modes such as "Collect the Fruit". Good stuff that'll keep the game fresh for a long time, especially if you have some buddies to play with, since Captian Pork is kind enough to support both hot-seat play and direct IP connection play, along with an experimental IPX mode, which does not work. Bottom Line: Captain Pork's World of Violence is violence the goold old fashioned way. Even if you're like me and don't like Liero you should give this tiny game that packs so much a try. Just make sure to read the Readme file for full info on how to play; I was lost until I read it. Source code is available at the author's homepage.

  ChoRenSha 68K
ChoRenSha 68K (herein known as "68K) is a retro-type 2D shooter, most similar to the classic shoot-em-up, Raiden. In 68K you fly over the same backround throughout the entire game, but you will be to busy keeping up with the insane, blazing fast 2D action to even have time to take notice of the backround. 68K makes use of the one-hit-kills system found in many games of its type. This keeps you on your toes the whole time, as just one of the 100's of on-screen bullets can quickly put an end to your life and at the same time dousing any special fire-power you may have picked up, causing you to start your next liife with your default gun, which is hardly enough to keep you alive ones the game starts getting difficult **End too long run-on sentence**. And difficult the game will get, but don't worry, you have unlimited continues that will star you back from the beginning of the level when used. I like the continue system, since I feel that since it starts you over from the beginning of the level it does not let you be careless and waste your lives with reckless abandon. At the same time, you have unlimited chances to keep you from getting frusturated at having to start the game over. There are only two buttons (not counting Up, Down, Left and Right) to make use of in 68K: Z and X, or Shoot and Bomb. Simple controls but I had the problem that although you can shoot without a break in your bullets, there is no rapid fire so you must keep on hitting the "Shoot" key, which can quickly tire your trigger finger. The graphics in 68K are a blast from the 2D past. Everything looks really early 90's, arguably the height of 2D 'shmup gaming :-). The explosions are also very impressive. The sound in 68K is a bit above average. Bottom Line: Old school shooting at it's near best, this is a real fun game that reminds you how good the 2D days were. People who don't enjoy 'shmups, especially ones without fancy graphics, should steer clear, but people with a tast for old style shooters: This is your game. Two thumbs up.

  CloudPhobia
Before I start the review, I'd like to note that this is Gamehippo's 2000th review! Nice work, Gamehippo! CloudPhobia is a great shooter. While it offers no new gameplay elements, it's still cool-looking and plays like a charm. And gameplay is what matters most, right? In CloudPhobia, you control a mech, soaring through the sky above the clouds, destroying any ships and mechs foolish enough to come your way. You are equipped with a laser gun with an unlimited supply of ammo and a small amount of missiles to take down the toughest of your foes. You've seen this type of side-scrolling shooter before, but CloudPhobia handles the concept very well. My only quip about the gameplay is that if an enemy passes through the left side of the screen, you lose health. This is annoying, but is easy to ignore. The graphics are excellent, some of the best I've seen in a freeware game. If CloudPhobia was a commercial PC game, the graphics would still be impressive. So, as you might think, you'll need a fast PC to run the game. I have a two-year-old PC, and I still experienced a little bit of slowdown here and there. Don't download CloudPhobia if you don't think your PC is equipped to run it. CloudPhobia's sound is nearly as good as its graphics. The game's sound effects are clear and crisp, and the music playing in the background fits the game perfectly. The graphics and sound combine to immerse you in the beautiful world of CloudPhobia. So, is CloudPhobia worth the download? If you're looking for some interesting new gameplay concepts, look elsewhere, but if you just want to have fun with a good shooter, CloudPhobia is for you. Also, you may want to download it just to scope the pretty graphics. Or, you may want to avoid it because of the pretty graphics, because they will push the power of your CPU to its fullest extent, and people running the game on an older machine will undoubtedly experience slowdown. The bottom line: CloudPhobia is a beautiful, enjoyable shooter with some recycled gameplay, even if it is very fun.
PC REQUIREMENTS: A very good PC. I even experienced slowdown on my 2-year-old PC.

  Frenetic
Choose one of three 'battle suits', customize your weapon and go kill like-minded computer controlled players. Each battle suit has two weapons to choose from and then you can add one of three gun pods to it. You play against other battle suits on a flat world, and the players are 2D sprites. I liked the weapon combos you could have, as well as the suits. The gameplay is a bit mundane with the only difference between levels being harder enemies and a change of colour for the surface you play on. For each level there are about five bots on the map, when you kill them some more appear. After about 4 waves the level is over. Finishing levels in campaign mode opens up additional levels. To improve, I think the game needs more variety in levels and some extra weapons you can get later in the game.
