  Toy Trouble
Toy Trouble is a great game. You choose between 8 various toy robots (4 you have to unlock - see help file), and you go about killing your opponent in different arenas. What's so unique about these "arenas", is that they are perfectly normal rooms! Try blasting your opponent with a Ping Pong Gun in your own bedroom! There's also various weapons to collect including: A machine gun, rockets, a ping pong gun and a CD Thrower. The single-player mode includes Arcade, Survival and Time Trial. The game also supports a multi-player mode (over the same computer) and a network mode. The game features great graphics, although, I experienced times when it got a bit choppy, great sound, and very fun gameplay!
PC REQUIREMENTS: 350 MHz CPU, 8 MB graphic card, DirectX 7.0a

  Tsunami 2010
"Psychaedelic oldschool abstract electronic space-shooter pixel-overdose fun in 96kb!" This is what Tsunami 2010 promises, and it has all of it: it's not simply a clone of Tempest 2000, but an even better game. In case you don't know what Tempest is, the original version is a 1980 arcade game in wireframe graphics, while Tempest 2000 was programmed by the great Jeff "Yak" Minter, and was one of the few good games for the unlucky Atari Jaguar console (a PC conversion exists). It's a bizarre shooter: in every stage, your "ship" is on a side of strange-looking tunnels or grids. It is capable of moving on lanes on the perimeter, and must destroy the enemies coming from the opposite side before being able to warp to the next stage. Like many classic oldies, a simple concept and great gameplay. Tsunami 2010 not only takes back the old fun, it's also an incredible programming exercise, since the game resides all in 96,000 bytes. You could think graphics are quite simple, like the 1980 original, then: wrong, they are really stunning. Tempest 2000 was already abstract and psychaedelic, this is at least five times more. The moving forms, the flashy colors, the light effects, the myriad of particles, are really something to see, though seriously headache-inducing and hallucinating at times [obviously, if subjects suffering from hepylepsia should already be careful about "regular" games, make them stay away from this one!]; no screenshot can give justice, you got to see them moving. Such graphics can give some "embarassment" even to the most powerful configurations if you are using the highest resolutions and detail levels, but don't worry, you have plenty of them to choose a combination suiting your system, though you will lose part of the visual impact. The built-in tunes are nothing special, but you can't protest since, given the little space, it's surprising the presence of music at all! However, the game allows you to use music CDs, or audio files in MOD format, to give it a better soundtrack; the two packs of mods available at the official site are a good start. But, putting the technical showcase aside, what makes Tsunami's gameplay better than the illustrious originals'? Well, there are some new bonuses, the best being one allowing the ship to jump off the grid. With it, you can still be able to destroy an enemy even if it reached your side. The enemies leave particles you can get, helping increase the score multiplier bar under the lives indicator: the more is filled, bigger the scores and bonuses you can get. A trigger-happy attitude is not recommended, since not only your bullets fill the screen with light and particles (so that too much mean less visibility), but they make the score multiplier go down. So keep cool, aim, and shoot as little as possible. All these little innovations enhance the original gameplay greatly, without perverting its original essence. There are lots of levels, and often the action gets quite frantic, especially after new and deadlier enemies are introduced. True, the gameplay can become repetitive after a certain amount of time, but it will be long before I grow tired of playing. The only big gripe is about the lack of an option to configure the keyboard, but it's little compared to the high qualities of Tsunami 2010, a game that is classic and very modern at the same time.

  UFO
UFO is one of the most innovative games I've ever played. It's made by the same people behind Smash (also on GameHippo), and, while Smash may have revolutionized a genre, UFO is in a genre all to its own! I've never seen a game like this before, and if somebody has, do not hesitate to e-mail me with its title. Obviously, you take control of a UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) that has one, two, three, or perhaps zero stars revolving around it. Each star shoots star-like objects in whichever direction they are facing. In order to destroy your target (whether it be computer-controlled, inanimate, or human), you must throw them against the wall using your stars. [Space] shoots, and you move your UFO with the arrow keys. There are two single player game modes. The first one is "Battle". Judging by the name, it should be somewhat obvious what kind of mode this is. Your job is to eliminate your computer opponent using the stars you are given. However, it is a normal deathmatch game. Sometimes you'll have a rapid-fire double star, and your opponent will have a one-star, one-shot, but extremely strong star. You'll never know until you play that level. The second mode is called "Time Attack", and, no, this isn't the normal boring time attack. It's actually a very refined target practice game, and not all the targets are the same. There are slow moving targets, fast moving targets, targets that you can run right through, and even targets that are attached to the background with a bungee cord. To add to the mayhem, you have to dodge yellow spiked balls that take away 50 points of health (about 1/4 your total). And did I mention that you have to complete it within ten seconds, not to mention keeping your health bar alive? Though both of the aforementioned modes were great, I think T-Attack is the best, not to mention the most addictive. While all the multiplayer modes are battle-deathmatch games in their essence (or at least all of the modes that I've accessed), they are each very intriguing. For instance, one of the modes takes away all stars, and pits you against the other person in a world of asteroids. The only way to kill your enemy is by running him into the wall using your UFO, but remember, the asteroids are constantly moving which means they may more damage to you than you do to your enemy, or vice versa. That's just one of the many different multiplayer modes, but I'll leave the rest as a surprise. The graphics are very crisp. The UFOs' cartoon-like graphics, the starry background and flashy stars go very well together. As for the sound, any player of Smash will easily recognize the same "intro", "finish", and "fail" music. The normal in-game music is the drum-and-techno stuff you hear everywhere. The Bottom Line: Fighting, Deathmatch, Spaceshooter, Arcade - all these could apply to this game, yet none of them capture its essence. UFO is a game like no other and therefore has no comparison. I fear that people may not be able to see it as the gem it truly is, and if my assumptions are correct, I pity their souls. This is not a game to be missed. Author's Other Games on GH: Smash

  Wodan - The Trial
Welcome to the world of Wodan. Here, all land is made up of colorful hexagons aimlessly floating on an endless sea. This land is inhabited by goofy looking men. As if it wasn't obvious, these men have one thing on their mind: domination. Wodan - The Trial is a turnbased strategy game with an innovative set of rules. Once you start a game, a small world of hexagons will be randomly generated based on the guidelines you set beforehand. Each hexagon is evenly devided up between the players, and ownership is identified through each player's color. Players take turns recruiting soldiers, possibly combining soldiers, conquering enemy hexagons or soldiers, or the intense thrill of cutting down pesky trees. To add depth to the combat, soldiers can be combined to create more powerful variations. Soldiers of higher levels are used to kill lower level ones, while opposing soldiers of equal level can't move in to adjacent squares nor attack each other (until you get level four soldiers; this results in both men dying). You can also construct towers. These function as immobile level two soldiers that don't require the normal upkeep all soldiers use. When one player takes over every hexagon on the board, they win. The graphics are simple but don't look bad at all. I like the graphics of the tiny men as they stand around, waving their arms without a care in the world. There is no music in Wodan, and very few sounds. There are little beeps and boops when you conquer land and a silly, undescribable sound when you destroy soldiers or villages. Up to eight human or computer opponents can be playing at the same time. Even more, you can play with other people on the same computer, across a network, or even through E-mail if for some reason you so desire. Despite the unappealing graphics and near lack of sound, the game is a blast to play. Wodan should offer a lot of replay value, even if you just play with computers. The computer opponents can put up a good fight, but it's encouraged that you find some other folks to play with. To top it off, Wodan is a very accessible, easy to learn game with a small 741 KB filesize. After reading this, there is no reason you shouldn't be playing Wodan - The Trials afterward.
