  Rocket Raid
This is the best clone of Missile Command I have ever seen. Using pixel explosions and a few graphics for cities, the author of this game has achieved stunning graphics and effects. In addition, extra features such as power-ups and super bombs add lots of fun to the game. Players getting further in the game will encounter new challenges whereas the old game just had faster missiles. The 'bouncing' ship and the dark cloud make the game significantly harder, but good players will not feel cheated by lack of missiles or other tricks; this Missile Command game is fair. It even has nice sound and music. Although this game is not even close to being faithful to the classics, it is still the best in its class.

  Seafarers of Catan 3D (Sea3D)
For those who have not played The Settlers of Catan board game, here is a brief overview: you are the commander of a colony on the isle of Catan. Through resource management (and using those resources to build roads, settlements, and cities), you seek to gain 10 "Victory Points" to win the game. "Victory Points" are earned through the amount of settlements and cities you have, special cards, and meeting certain requirements (such as who has the longest continuous road). When it comes to involving strategy games, The Settlers of Catan is one of the best. This version of the game could also be considered one of the best. The 3D interface is smooth and responsive. The camera control is simple: hold down the Right Mouse Button to spin the board around and the Mouse Wheel to zoom in and out. It couldn't be simpler to control. The graphics themselves are like looking down on a real Settlers of Catan hex board, right down to the number tokens. Everything is clear and readable, even up close. You have the choice of the default, more grainy graphics (for anyone with a slower computer or graphics card) or a "Vivid" OpenGL graphics option that makes the board so real looking, you would swear you could reach out and touch the cardboard hex tiles. The sounds are very nice and clear. Each move you make is accompanied by a sound: the rolling of wooden dice on the board, sawing and hammering when cities and settlements are built, and the evil laugh of the Robber as he is ready to move on your opponents at the first Seven on the dice. The game itself plays just like you were playing the real board game surrounded by your friends. Pieces are easy to place and move. Illustrated lines and zones come up that show you where you can place anything you need to. Other than the legend, though, the game has no real help for playing the game itself. While the game is mostly self-guided and doesn't take too long to learn, having the game rules somewhere in the help system would have been a plus. For those who want to play online, the author's webpage has ladder matches and a chat room, where you can join the large community this game has built. In short, if you want a great strategy board game to play online or with friends, look no further than this one. UPDATE: Sea3d has been updated to 1.2.0a. It is a required download, especially if you use the S3D Connector to play online games, as many changes to the website (including online gaming and ranking systems) have occured. Also fixes other minor bugs. Download links you to the download page.

  Silver Knights
Silver Knights is a fun 3D mech game that is too good to be ignored. It is a Japanese game, though the language in the game is English. Right now, there is only a Battle Mode, where you can play three different game types. There is a story mode planned, as well, but don't expect it to surface for a few months. The game gets updated every now and then, so check back to the website every couple of weeks for updates. The graphics in Silver Knights are wonderful. The mechs look cool and are done in Japanese style. The game is all in 3D and the special effects and explosions look great. It looks and plays like a newer PS1 game, which is quite a feat for a freeware game. There's never a hint of slowdown, but I found the camera angle to be slightly annoying. It jerks around a bit too much for my liking. The many levels in Silver Knights are done beautifully, and each plays very well. Though some levels were a bit boring in previous versions of SK, the levels in the latest version are all very enjoyable. The controls in the game are a bit aggravating, but can be changed in the options menu. Still, locking onto an enemy remains a bit frustrating. On the other hand, the gameplay is simply excellent. You choose one of several mechs, decide which team you'll be on, and battle it out in one of 10 arenas. You have 3 projectile attacks, and many hand-to-hand combos are possible, as well. All of the characters are fairly balanced, and each one has different attacks and capabilities. You can adjust the AI to be as easy or difficult as you want, which adds loads of time to the replay value. Not to mention, with a separate program (downloadable at the author's site), you can give the robots emblems. You can also edit their paint jobs with the main executable. The music is jazzy and upbeat, and very pleasing to the ears. There are at least five tracks, too, so the music you'll hear while playing SK won't still be in your head throughout the day. It beats the single track of boring piano music of past versions by a mile. The sound is also pretty good, but isn't particularly amazing. Sounds of boosts and gunshots from your mech can be heard, but the clanks and whirrs heard in some other mech games (e.g. Bachan-On) aren't to be found. Simply put, Silver Knights is one of the the best freeware mech games found on the internet. As of now, I'd say it's THE best. No doubt about it. It's still progressing nicely, too. It currently resembles a very fun, near-complete PS1 game. Teshima plans on adding a few new mechs, the story mode needs to be made (probably not as daunting as a task as it may seem), and a whole LOT of bugs still need to be fixed, but Silver Knights is getting better with each update. UPDATE ver. 0.04W:-New mech: Kaede-2 new maps: Desert and Bridge-Forest map has been revamped

  Sokoban3D
It would be a really neat concept to transform the classic logic game called Sokoban (from 1982) into a 3D game with Doom-styled setting. This is it! Sokoban3D features the traditional Sokoban game rules with a terrific visual realism and an accompaniment of cool eerie background music ("borrowed" from the game Dungeon Master 2). The game comes with several levels and a training mode too. Mental precaution for the impatient: Some of the levels are fairly tough to solve right off the bat. Think ahead!

  Space Corps. Armageddon
SC: Armageddon is a suprisingly fun space shooter of epic proportions. In SC:A, you are on the blue team, battling the red. Thing is, total chaos ensues as ships fight in large battlegroups, with great AI that makes ships retreat from a hopeless battle! Every time a member of a team dies, they are reborn, using 1 life from the team pool. If the player dies, they get a ship downgrade. If they kill an enemy or take 1/3 of it's health, and then dies, they get an upgrade! The control on SC:A is simple, using only the arrow keys, spacebar, and ctrl. It works surprisingly well, and the ships have variable speed, turn radius, and other factors. This game is also very customizable, if you know what to do. No, there are no ingame options. But you can open and easily edit every sound and image in the game. A bit of warning: there are 91 ship classes in the game. That's alot of drawing! And I have no clue why there are space stations. They don't appear in the game. This, and random forces every play, make for a very long-lived game. This game is capable of 40 vs. 40 ship battles all at once, with more ships on the way! Unfortunately, there are no options, but this somehow makes the game better. The graphics on SC:A are simple, 2d sprites, which are very well drawn, considering each sprite is only 64x64 pixels, and the background is exquisite. The sounds are all very good, except for the lasers. This, however, does not really change the score. All in all, Space Corps.: Armageddon is a one-of-a-kind shooter that is absolutely fantastic. There are other Space Corps. games, but none of them (or any game) is like this.
